Summary

"Fans of the forensics-oriented novels of such mystery writers as Kathy Reichs and Patricia Cornwell。。。not to mention television series like CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, will make an eager audience for this one。"--Booklist

On a patch of land in the Tennessee hills, human corpses decompose in the open air, aided by insects, bacteria, and birds, unhindered by coffins or mausoleums。 This is Bill Bass's "Body Farm," where nature takes its course as bodies buried in shallow graves, submerged in water, or locked in car trunks serve the needs of science and the cause of justice。

In Death's Acre, Bass invites readers on an unprecedented journey behind the gates of the Body Farm where he revolutionized forensic anthropology。 A master scientist and an engaging storyteller, Bass reveals his most intriguing cases for the first time。 He revisits the Lindbergh kidnapping and murder, explores the mystery of a headless corpse whose identity astonished police, divulges how the telltale traces of an insect sent a murderous grandfather to death row--and much more。

Wow。 So good! Loved the subject matter and how easy of a read this was。 There were so many stories and details I found so fascinating and I was pleasently surprised that it was not a dry and boring book。 Fun read for living in Knoxville as well。

Fascinating and engaging read! It definitely shows it’s age/region with a lot of racist and sexist terminology, so mild TW there。 However it’s nothing beyond what I expect from the time period。

1。5 stars。 The audiobook is narrated by George Grizzard, who sounds like a grandfather (generic); very comforting to listen to。 Author William Bass, unfortunately, doesn't come off as well。 He's a relic of another age, not especially heinous but always a little dated, in the way he characterizes his "teaching assistant", the skull of a poor black woman; the "science vs culture" of exhuming Native American burial sites; the beats of his personal life。 And most of the book is about Bass rather tha 1。5 stars。 The audiobook is narrated by George Grizzard, who sounds like a grandfather (generic); very comforting to listen to。 Author William Bass, unfortunately, doesn't come off as well。 He's a relic of another age, not especially heinous but always a little dated, in the way he characterizes his "teaching assistant", the skull of a poor black woman; the "science vs culture" of exhuming Native American burial sites; the beats of his personal life。 And most of the book is about Bass rather than the body farm--which comes up but almost anecdotally, glimpses of research sparked by a third party, with little of the farm's development, management, or goals。Take all my criticisms with a grain of salt, since I discovered upon finishing that I'd read the abridged audiobook。 Probably the full book is better (except that it's sans Grizzard)。 But then, that discovery hasn't compelled me to reread or figure out what I missed。 The body farm is so cool, fascinating even, helpful and good, I'm big fan; but I don't want to spend more time with Bass。 。。。more

As someone who is fascinated with, and not squeamish about death and decomposition, I found this book absolutely fascinating。 There is a good balance of William Bass's life, crime stories and scientific talk。Great paced, educational & easy to read given the heavy subject matter and scientific aspect。Will read again。 As someone who is fascinated with, and not squeamish about death and decomposition, I found this book absolutely fascinating。 There is a good balance of William Bass's life, crime stories and scientific talk。Great paced, educational & easy to read given the heavy subject matter and scientific aspect。Will read again。 。。。more

A real account about how the famous Body-Farm started and got it's name。It's an account with over 15 cases where Forensics has helped solve them and also how forensics began。 Here and there there is also a personal account and personal history from Mr。 Bass。 i am。。。。disappointed with this book。 i expected more。。。information? i don't know。 it's hard to explain, on the one hand you do get a lot of info about the process of decay and how to distinguish female form male bones but。。。ih。。 i don't know A real account about how the famous Body-Farm started and got it's name。It's an account with over 15 cases where Forensics has helped solve them and also how forensics began。 Here and there there is also a personal account and personal history from Mr。 Bass。 i am。。。。disappointed with this book。 i expected more。。。information? i don't know。 it's hard to explain, on the one hand you do get a lot of info about the process of decay and how to distinguish female form male bones but。。。ih。。 i don't know。 where are the 6 pages of bot fly larvae, where are all the other bugs??where are the 10 pages of decay in water, which fish come first??where are the 8 pages of explanation how you set up a body, what happens, how you process it??it was still interesting。。。but。。。it felt。。。。lacking。 。。。more

My mom read this book a while ago (it was published in 2001)。 Good book and a bit gross at times, hah (a lot of rotting cadavers)。 Sometimes I felt like I was in Anatomy again, learning all of the names of the bones。 What an interesting job a forensic anthropologist has! I recommend this book to anyone interested in anatomy, science, and crime-solving。

The original CSI。 Cases from Dr。 Bass' life and research。 While some material is a bit squeamish, it's always respectful and interesting。 If you're considering donating your body to science you should read this book。 I enjoyed it particularly because I live in Knoxville so having this research in my area was very good to know about。 The original CSI。 Cases from Dr。 Bass' life and research。 While some material is a bit squeamish, it's always respectful and interesting。 If you're considering donating your body to science you should read this book。 I enjoyed it particularly because I live in Knoxville so having this research in my area was very good to know about。 。。。more

A very interesting look into the beginning of the FBIs Body Farm。 I certainly learned a lot about forensic anthropology while reading this book。

I loved the way this was written, it followed his professional life through some of the most prominent cases in his mind。 It was very interesting and I really enjoyed reading it, it didn’t feel like some other non-fiction scientific books that are very dry- without the humor attached。 This has a good balance of levity and seriousness to keep me engaged and thinking through it all。 “As in life, so in science: One thing leads to another, and before you know it, you find yourself someplace you neve I loved the way this was written, it followed his professional life through some of the most prominent cases in his mind。 It was very interesting and I really enjoyed reading it, it didn’t feel like some other non-fiction scientific books that are very dry- without the humor attached。 This has a good balance of levity and seriousness to keep me engaged and thinking through it all。 “As in life, so in science: One thing leads to another, and before you know it, you find yourself someplace you never imagined。”Man, his path of scientific inquiry was wild to read but having him follow the ‘why’ is definitely a trait that is admired。 。。。more

Delivers exactly what it promises。 I found his writing style a little stuffy, but overall this was a great in-depth read。

I read the follow up to this one first (or, rather, listened to it) several years ago。 I don’t remember it clearly enough to know if things from this book were repeated in that one, but since I recognized much of the author’s personal stories I feel like they must have been? Specifically talking about his wives deaths。Speaking of, this dude literally can’t be alone。 His wives keep dying and he just marries whoever is closest within a few months。 It makes him happy I guess, but it seems a bit str I read the follow up to this one first (or, rather, listened to it) several years ago。 I don’t remember it clearly enough to know if things from this book were repeated in that one, but since I recognized much of the author’s personal stories I feel like they must have been? Fascinating and well written account from the scientist who founded the Body Farm in Tennessee。

Engaging book filled with information and lessons with tasteful humour。 I was honestly expecting it to be a textbook like read but I was pleasantly surprised at the autobiographical touch given to this scientific book。 I highly recommend this to anyone who is interested in Forensics or Forensic Anthropology。

Pretty informative but suffers because of the lack of voice and uses some old fashioned terms。 Lacks empathy for victims in certain cases

Interesting, informing, and amazingly well told。 Dr。 Bass’s personality jumps from the page and at times it feels as if you’re listening to his stories while you both enjoy a cup of coffee。
